India Post is the body, governed by the Ministry of Communications of the Government of India, which operates one of the most widely distributed and complex postal networks in the world. With more than 1,50,000 post offices under its belt, India Post plays a crucial role in the lives of Indian citizens in a myriad of ways: delivering mails, accepting deposits under Small Savings Schemes, providing life insurance cover under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) and providing retail services like bill collection and sale of forms.
Besides, it fulfills other citizen welfare functions, such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) wage disbursement and old age pension payments on the Government’s behalf.
